Histroy of the GLASSAC-Conference

In 1999 the conference "Glass, Art and Science" took place in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. During this conference the participants noticed the growing need for a glass community where they could share their knowledge and discuss the latest innovations and practical problems that go along with the conservation of historical glass.

Consequently in 2005 a conference called "Glass Science in Art and Conservation" - short GLASSAC - was convened in Lisbon for the first time. In this conference the scope of application was split in two areas: art and conservation.

Three years later, in 2008, with around 200 participants the second GLASSAC-conference took place in Valencia, Spain. On the one hand the participants of this conference explored and analyzed significant developments in the science of glass as well as technical possibilities and on the other hand they review practical issues and ethical dilemmas conservators are confronted with.

In 2011 an international group of scientists, artists and people working in the field of glass will meet in the Bronnbach Monastery near Wertheim, Germany, on 10th - 12th May 2011 to take part in the third GLASSAC-conference. The central theme will be: Innovative technologies in glass art, design and conservation from the 19th to the 21st century - the role of the sciences.
